Vanity Fair referred to the duo as "musical masterminds. People are about it, but I knew it would be [kinda weird]. When you already have a platform like Timeflies, your brain is kinda built to have certain expectations.
So I feel like I'm starting from scratch, and it's most the nerve racking part of it but also the most exciting. I'm just happy to be in a place where I can say and do whatever I want. I was ready to explore. I'm out here in LA [alone], and I'm kinda left exploring 'what is this now? There's this line in the second verse It clicked. So by that logic, just start. I view this song as a tone setter for my project as the lyrics kind of explain why I want to do this.
And "So Cal"? Instagram and YouTube and whatnot only capture the highlights, and I wanted to express my real experience. Very different. I think everyone has that leaving home experience, wondering who their true ride or die friends will be.
If they needed one, whose couch would they would sleep on? I wanted to shed a little light on the dark side of sunny L. Are any of the songs you plan to release as Cal tracks that were written with Timeflies in mind that didn't end up working out for Timeflies' catalog? The idea for Cal records were always separate ideas that served a purpose to my project and telling my story. No; I think hiatus is a fair term. Both Rob and I have been involved in everything each of us has done for as long as I can remember.
We both wanted the opportunity to see where our individual ideas could take us. I think my fans are really going to connect with someone telling an honest story. Each song conveys a real moment or emotion.
Did working on this project bring any closure or resolution to these issues? It did, and it also created [some issues.
And it was therapeutic. It made me realize things, like we got to talk it out. Except sing it out on a record. One of the wonderful contradictions of music is that you can make your most personal record, and it suddenly has a universal appeal. And I wanted to make a lot of those lyrics like it could mean whatever you wanted it to like you are going to adopt it to your life. But yeah, for me, listening to those from the context of what we just talked about, it is definitely heavier. Hope Driskill tied the know.
Did marriage affect the songwriting on this project? That just made me more in my own skin. The Identity Crisis , as much as it is now, is like reflecting on the past couple of years.
I love love.
