And my father burst my bubble. That was reality. But we always thought of ourselves as a big band. Even when we were starting out, we thought we deserved the speakers, and the lights. Once we got onstage we were going to be prepared. You must have done something right because you got signed to a record deal …. We recorded a demo. We did a plate sale; you cook carne asada and chicken and you sell plates.
And with the money, we recorded a demo in Corpus Christi. We recorded at Freddy Records, because that's were Ramon Ayala recorded. My mom had to sign for us because we were still in high school. I think it was a three-year deal with two options. Tejano music, as you ' ve pointed out, was huge not only in Texas but all over the country at the time. But you weren ' t playing Tejano, were you?
Tejano music was a bunch of keyboards. We were a band from Texas playing accordion music. Our first records were labeled "Tejano," but our music is more traditional Mexicano. And the group started to get success because we were damn good. We were a pretty damn good little band. In , two members of the group died in a traffic accident in Mexico. How did that affect Intocable and its music?
It was huge. When you have a near death experience, you do change. We stopped thinking about music -- it was [about] getting back together as a person. It was traumatizing. When we decided to go back into the studio we decided there was nothing to lose. You ' ve done some pretty risky things with your music -- you ' re actually working on a pretty game-changing project right now for Can you tell me about it?
I want to work with different producers to produce two songs each. I want to work with a Nashville producer, an electronic producer, maybe a guy from England. Let us become the submissive musicians, where we give the songs to these producers and they tell us how to do it.
We're going to record a regular Intocable album, and in the "B" record we cover them in different ways, just to break the routine. I listen to Howard Stern every day. It's been 20 years of being relevant, and sticking to our guns. In the DVD they ask me how I feel. I say, "I feel confident when I get onstage because I have a damn good band that plays with me. The surviving members were hospitalized for weeks in Monterrey, Mexico, where they had been headed for a concert. After some time off to heal, physically as well as emotionally, Intocable staged a grand return with Contigo The album was preceded by a lead single, "El Amigo Que Se Fue," that paid tribute to their departed bandmembers.
Intocable 's triumphant return after the tragedy that befell them inspired a legion of new fans, and the band's popularity peaked to new heights. As a concert draw they were almost unbeatable. They sold out four consecutive nights at Mexico City's Auditorio Nacional and the group's headlining appearance at Reliant Stadium in Houston, drew over 70, fans -- one record at the time. They also played two sold-out dates at the 10,capacity Monterrey Arena in Monterrey, Mexico.
Intimamente showcases Intocable in an "unplugged" setting, performing many of their hits in a low-key fashion. It too won a Grammy. The group shifted gears and took a brave step outside their comfort zone with 's Crossroads: Cruce de Caminos. While 's 2C didn't fare quite as well, it nonetheless reached number five at Mexican Regional albums. The band continued to tour and issue compilations.
The third, "Arrepientete," was Top Five. The fourth single from the album, "Llueve," debuted live at 's Premio lo Nuestro. There, the group won the three categories they were nominated in. Billboard awarded them a Lifetime Achievement award the same year.
Intocable signed to Fonovisia. Full of clanging electric guitars and live drums, the monster single "Te Amo Para Siempre " ruled the Latin and Regional Airplay as well as the Digital Sales charts for weeks. Intocable took nothing for granted, however. They toured Mexico, the U. EMI continued to issue compilations, keeping the band in the public eye. Jude's Children's Hospital; they donated all the proceeds.
Two weeks later, they issued the pre-release single and video for "Tu Ascencia. On January 23, they announced a full partnership with St. Jude's to continue fundraising. In May a second single, "Arrepentido," appeared before the album Highway in June -- their first full-length in three years, and their seventh to top the Top Latin Albums charts.
They spent the next two years touring, and re-entered the studio in late The recording landed in the Top Ten at streaming during week of its release. Intocable received a lifetime achievement award at that year's Premio lo Nuestro ceremony.
